West African Drumming Class

TUESDAY NIGHTS, 7-8:15pm

Drum classes will be held at the Joyful Sounds music studio in the Blackport Building on the corner of Lake and Diamond, 959 Lake Dr SE, Grand Rapids 49506. This will be a weekly class focusing on West African traditional rhythms from the Tam Tam Mandingue Djembe Academy curriculum. If you are seeking to improve your technique and learn more djembe vocabulary, this is the class for you! In addition to learning the traditional parts, we will work on solo phrasing and create arrangements.

All levels of experience welcome - there is something for everyone!

*$5/drum/class if you do not have your own djembe. Must reserve drum rental in advance.

Learn traditional rhythms from West African village life using hardwood drums from Guinea, West Africa. Classes for all ages:

4-6 yr olds, 9:30-10:15a. $50

7-10 yr olds, 10:30-11:30a. $60

11-adult, 1:30-4:30p. $130

We will meet everyday and offer a showcase on the last day for friends and family. Registration is simple: send me an email (leahivory@me.com) to sign up. A $20 deposit will hold your place in class. Michael Markus, president of Wula Drums, is a visionary and charismatic teacher of drum and dance throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Michael is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of cultural arts and socioeconomic development in Guinea, West Africa, where he has based the production end of his company, Wula Drums, where authentically elegant and professional sounding drums are crafted. 

M'Bemba Bangoura has traveled the world as a performer and teacher of the djembe drum and African dance. He has been an integral part of the drum and dance scene nationwide since 1992, and is one of the prominent ambassadors of Guinean drum and dance.

On-going Tuesday night drumming

Tuesday night drumming is an on-going open group drum class. We meet every Tuesday from 6:00-7:30pm. All ages and levels of experience are welcome. Each class begins with a warm up and review of basic technique. We then learn a traditional West African rhythm, beginning with it's history, ethnicity, and region where it comes from, and moving into the djembe accompaniments, the sangban, kenkeni and dununba melodies, and eventually soloing.

Learn traditional West African rhythms on beautiful hand carved Guinea drums! In these classes, students will learn djembe technic and authentic rhythms from West African village life. At the end of the week, we will perform the rhythms that we learned for our friends and family. Classes will take place at the Grand Rapids Christian Middle School, 2036 Chesaning SE.
