Tuesday night drumming

Classes held at the Yellow Door Music Studio (formerly Joyful Sounds), 959 Lake Drive SE, parking lot off Diamond. This is a weekly class focusing on West African traditional rhythms from the Tam Tam Mandingue Djembe Academy curriculum, founded by Mamady Keïta. If you are seeking to improve your technique and learn more djembe vocabulary, this is the class for you! In addition to learning the traditional parts, we will work on solo phrasing and create arrangements.

All levels of experience welcome - there is something for everyone.

Drum and dance with Michael Taylor and Leah Ivory! TTMDA Senior Certified teacher Michael Taylor will be coming to Grand Rapids to share his djembe knowledge and teach rhythms that have been passed on to him through his teacher, Mamady Keïta.
Following two drum classes, stick around and move your body to the ancient rhythm Moribayassa. Our bodies need to shed the burdens and hardships that come our way.
All levels of experience welcome for all classes!

WEST AFRICAN DRUM CAMP

Classes available for many ages. In the morning classes, students will have the opportunity to learn examples of traditional djembe accompaniments from West Africa, along with playing rhythm games and exploring improv drumming. The afternoon class will be an intensive learning experience as students will learn several full arrangements of traditional West African rhythms, using djembes as well as the sangban, kenkeni, and the dununba - the drums that provide the foundation for the rhythms. We will work on technique and memorization and explore solo techniques and improv skills. Each class will offer a showcase performance for friends and family at the end of the week.

9:30-10:30 6-8 year olds ($60)

10:45-11:45 9-11 year olds ($60)

1:15-4:15 12-adult ($150)

TUESDAY NIGHTS, 7-8:15pm

Learn traditional rhythms from West African village life using hardwood drums from Guinea, West Africa. Classes for all ages:

Michael Markus, president of Wula Drums, is a visionary and charismatic teacher of drum and dance throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Michael is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of cultural arts and socioeconomic development in Guinea, West Africa, where he has based the production end of his company, Wula Drums, where authentically elegant and professional sounding drums are crafted. 

M'Bemba Bangoura has traveled the world as a performer and teacher of the djembe drum and African dance. He has been an integral part of the drum and dance scene nationwide since 1992, and is one of the prominent ambassadors of Guinean drum and dance.

Tuesday night drumming is an on-going open group drum class. We meet every Tuesday from 6:00-7:30pm. All ages and levels of experience are welcome. Each class begins with a warm up and review of basic technique.
